Seeds are small, blue-black in color and kidney-shaped, with a mildly sweet aroma that is enhanced after baking or roasting.

Poppy seeds contain very little opiate oils, largely due to the fact that the best quality seeds are obtained from dried, mature seed pods instead of unripe green pods. Be aware, however,  consuming poppy seeds, shortly before taking a drug screening test can cause false-positive results.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

Black Poppy seeds are an oilseed obtained from dried seed pods of the poppy flower. These tiny, kidney-shaped seeds have been harvested by various civilizations for thousands of years for both culinary and sedative uses. To some extent, harvesting for poppy seeds is in conflict with harvesting for opium. Poppy seeds of superior quality are harvested from ripe seed pods whereas opium is harvested while the seed pods are still green and their latex abundant.

Qualities: Poppy seeds are composed of 6% water, 28% carbohydrates, 42% fat, and 21% protein and are rich source of thiamine, folate, and several essential minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

Common uses: The seeds are used, whole. ground, as an ingredient in many foods all over the world- especially in pastry and breads, or pressed to yield poppy seed oil.

Storage: Store in cool, dark, dry place
